CHAPTER NINE

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 6

Jake hustled into the Arrowhead Stadium media room and took a seat in the rear just as the Chiefs’ representative announced that the coach and general manager would arrive in two minutes. The morning guy for one of the city’s sports radio stations was seated directly in front of him. Jake leaned forward and tapped him on the shoulder. “Any idea what’s up?”

The guy glanced at him dismissively, then sniped, “I guess you’ll find out with the rest of us, pal.”

Jake sat back, refusing to take the bait. A woman a couple seats away, a weekend sports anchor for one of the local TV stations, overheard the exchange. She caught Jake’s eye and mouthed, Asshole.

All types of media were represented, from small-town newspapers to correspondents for national websites. TV and radio personalities typically sat in the front with beat reporters from the Kansas City Star. Most were friendly and willing to help a colleague. A few looked down on little guys. One or two, like the guy who had just blown Jake off, looked down on everybody.

Jake was definitely one of the little guys. That was okay, though. Three times over the last year he had broken important stories before the others. It helped to be local and a KC native. Jake had friends at Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadium, where the Royals played baseball. Some were well-placed in the organizations. Others worked security and, in one instance, as a janitor. If they saw or heard things, they let him know.

The Chiefs’ general manager and coach arrived on schedule, their expressions all business. They took seats behind a bank of microphones, cellphones, and a couple of old school cassette players and announced that one of the team’s key players, a lineman with a dubious reputation named Brian Mott, had been accused of trying to buy cocaine and beating up three men at a downtown bar earlier that day. The media was poised on the edge of their seats as the GM explained that an investigation was underway and that Mott would not play again until the issue was cleared up. The words were barely out of his mouth before nearly everyone in the room jumped up, each trying to be first with their questions.

One that didn’t jump was Jake. He slipped out and sprinted for the exit.
